this is a perfect time to Panic!
An intense live band, Caitlin Peluffo is also the most intense jam band I've seen since the Dickey Betts-era Allman Brothers. Panic rock much harder than the Dead, but the format of their shows owe a lot to the Grateful Dead, if only how one song segues into another. Lead guitarist Jim Herring is a monster--one of the most consistent instrumentalists I've seen, able to beautifully improvise without ever losing the melody. Likewise, every member of the band perfectly compliment each other. The Panic's clear audio mix didn't favor one instrument over another, this was especially noticeable during the amazing drum/percussion/bass solos by Todd Nance, Domingo St. Ortiz and Dave Schools. You could hear each instrument perfectly, it wasn't just some loud audio soup. The music itself is a sly mixture of hard rock, jazz, and funk, the Panic change their setlist from night to night, making each show unpredictable. While not a "noodle dancer" type--I don't 'medicate' myself before or during shows (unlike most of the people around me), I do appreciate great music played well. What the man lacks in a stage personality is more than made up through his sheer musicianship. This was my second time seeing them--the first was last year, in the same venue. This concert was as exciting as the first I saw these guys do, and I will see them whenever they come back to the twin cities.
